The use of hashtags across all social media such as Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, and likes have benefited so many business owners in generating more leads. However, while some people do not know how to create hashtags some do not know how to accurately use hashtags and have made the use of hashtag void.

You might likely feel why should I use a hashtag after all it is not necessary. Well, I have come to assert to you that hashtag plays a very significant role in building your brand.

1. Brainstorm for ideas:-  This is a preliminary stage where you source or come up with ideas, the following points should be considered while brainstorming for ideas in creating your hashtag. 


  • Decide the purpose of your hashtag:- Here you have to determine the purpose you want your hashtag to serve whether it is for marketing your company, promoting your brand, or making awareness of an event. You need to ask yourself clarifying questions such as who is my target audience?, what emotion do I want to evoke? 


  • Write out the list of ideas:- write out 10 -15 different hashtag ideas you have generated. So from this idea, you can choose the best option. Just ensure that you're not in a hurry so that you don't end up picking the mediocre or bad idea. 


  • include your brand name:-  when you include your brand name in your hashtag it directs your audience to you. This way it improves your brand's awareness. You can either use your brand name or your product name. 


  • consider using numbers to make your hashtag unique:- Should in case your brand hold any event(maybe a sales promo, giveaway, or challenge, etc ) you should consider using the number of the year while creating your hashtag, you can do this by either using the full number of the year, for example, #LDC2023 or shortening it by using the last two numbers #LDC23.

Note that if your hashtag has been used I will urge you to move on to the next idea on your list. That's why I indicated that you have a list of ideas. 


  • Ensure that your hashtag is communicating the right message. 


  • Ensure that your hashtag is easy to memorize so that your customers won't find it difficult to search or use it. 


  • Make use of topical words that will get your audience engaged in the use of your hashtag. 


  • Proofread your hashtag:- You carry out this action by weeding out irrelevant words/characters. Ensure that you do not use special characters such as exclamation marks, commas, periods (full stop), hyphens, or words that do not use words that do not   in your hashtags


 3. Promote:- This is the stage where you boost the visibility and the use of your hashtag. You can do this by posting it on all your social media handles, asking your followers/customers to use your hashtag, or seeking the help of an influencer to help you post it. 


When you do this consistently there is a high possibility that people will like your hashtag and start making use of your hashtag.
